A nearby market is not necessarily a simple market. Language, distribution networks, demand size and payment practice can change the entry model.

1. Define a testable market question

Replace “Is Armenia a good market?” with: which customer buys which product, at what price and through which channel?

2. Start with a market test

Before a high-cost structure, consider a distributor, local representative, pilot project or limited customer set.

3. Review the local partner

Track record, sales network, financial capacity, conflicts and each party’s responsibilities should be checked and written into the agreement.

4. Include hidden execution cost

  • Translation and localisation
  • Logistics and customs
  • After-sales service
  • Collection of receivables
  • Management time and local follow-up

5. Set continue-or-stop criteria

Define leads, pilot sales, margin and collection time before starting so the next decision is based on evidence.
